Internet Connection

Our system is based on a number of shared ADSL connections to the Internet. ADSL is a technique for using the telephone lines to carry high speed data. Although BT provide the telephone lines, we have used a third party, Eclipse, to provide the ADSL service.

Mail Service

Our Mail service is provided by Fasthosts. We can define unlimited e-mail addresses for our members, and mail can be collected either inside the Abthorpe network or from anywhere in the world.

Wireless Network

A wireless network is used within the villages to bring broadband to your homes. A  number of base stations have been installed to ensure that everyone can receive a good wireless signal.

Each user is equipped with a client wireless unit which links to one of the base stations. We use several different types, depending on the location of the users’ PCs and the type of PC. Trees, thick stone walls and adjacent houses all make obstacles to good reception of the wireless signals. PC specifications vary, especially with older ones. Typical client equipment falls into the following types :

USB client, such as the Actiontec, which connects directly to the PC. These have to have good line of sight to one of the base stations.
Ethernet client, such as the Linksys WET-11, which can be installed in a loft or even on the outside of a house in a weatherproof box. An Ethernet cable has to run from the PC to the client. These clients can also be used with external aerials, mounted on the TV aerial for instance.
Built in wireless. Many laptops have their own built-in wireless these days. In fact, since ABbA started this has become much more common. Laptops usually have to be used near a window to get a good wireless signal, but even then this is only possible in some parts of the village.

Homes with multiple PCs can be accommodated, either by providing each PC with its own wireless client or by creating a local network in the house.
